I am currently a pupil in the Lower Sixth playing off a handicap of +1. Winchester College’s golf bursary enables pupils that have a talent in golf to attend the school; giving them an abundance of opportunities to improve their golf and receive an outstanding education. The benefit for me has been playing the sport every day, either at Hockley Golf Club or the on-campus facilities. School facilities include a state of the art ‘Huxley artificial putting green’ along with 3 practice nets. There are also two golf mats on one of the sports fields.
At Hockley Golf Club, I typically spend time with their resident professional, Gary Stubbington, who coaches the school team three times a week. The team plays a full season of team matches and individual competitions. Gary also teaches any beginners who choose to learn golf during their time at the school.
The impact of this opportunity is hard to quantify, but I believe it has helped me to achieve greater success in both my golf, as well as my academic studies. This has helped me move closer to my ambition of playing and studying at university in the USA.
I have experienced the huge benefits of learning in an institution that recognises the importance of individuals and encourages you to try different things. Boarding is a brilliant part of Winchester College and one that just adds to the whole experience of being part of a wider community. I can honestly say that the golf bursary has given me so much more than golf!
