We are proud of our reputation for academic success, but a Winchester education provides more than academic results alone. We encourage pupils to investigate themes, explore ideas and see connections well beyond the examined syllabus. This ensures that they leave Winchester with the ability to understand and tackle the complexities and challenges which further education (not to mention life) will bring.
The school’s highly experienced Futures department offers comprehensive support for a pupil's career and progression throughout the Sixth Form, allowing them to explore their interests and career options, prepare for and ultimately make successful applications to top universities and degree apprenticeships.
Pupils in Sixth Form are invited to join Wykeham Links, a networking platform to connect with Old Wykehamists and current and former parents to harness additional careers advice. Pupils benefit from connecting with experts in their fields and individuals with a wealth of experience who are able to provide CV advice, university insight, and mentoring. The annual Futures Fair also provides pupils with another opportunity to network and gain valuable advice from delegates from a range of sectors and careers.
A significant number of our pupils each year go to Oxbridge or a Russell Group university. Other destinations include Ivy League or prestigious US universities, such as Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, UNC, UPenn and Yale.
The school has extensive experience in helping pupils to prepare successful applications to the most competitive universities in the UK and worldwide. Preparation is overseen by the Director of Higher Education. Our teaching staff, many of whom have master’s degrees and doctorates from the world’s top universities, support pupils through tutorials, speaker events, societies, mock interviews, and preparation for admissions tests. Each pupil is assigned an individual mentor to oversee their application who helps with their personal statements, choose universities and courses, and devise an appropriate programme of summer work. Our extensive records of our pupil applications in previous years allow us to give pupils and their families a precise sense of what it takes to gain admission to even the most competitive institutions worldwide.
