All that Glitters
A new exhibition in Treasury explores the College’s important collection of silver. More than thirty pieces have been chosen to illustrate the development of the collection over time and to explore the ways that silver has been important in the life of the College. Among the highlights are two of the largest known seventeenth-century drinking cups, a fascinating variety of communion vessels for use in Chapel, and work by leading modern designers from the 1930s to the 1980s.
Winchester is one of three English schools with an historical collection of silver. While some pieces are on permanent display in Treasury, many more remain in everyday use and are being shown for the first time in this exhibition. Treasury is open every day, free of charge, from 2PM to 4PM.
Supporting Scholarship
The exhibition is the culmination of a year-long project to research and catalogue the College’s silver, making it available online. Much of the work has been undertaken by a group of our sixth form pupils who have been reading hallmarks, deciphering inscriptions, weighing, measuring and cleaning. Most of the exhibition text, and the object layout, is also the work of pupils.
